The Cuban who left the island for a town in Spain

Cuban Odaysi, along with her husband Robert and their three children, left Havana to start a new life in Villameriel, a small town in the province of Palencia with just 111 inhabitants.

The family took advantage of the Democratic Memory Law, also known as the “grandchild law,” which allows foreigners with Spanish ancestry to obtain citizenship.

In May 2024, the Cuban woman and her family arrived in the town with the hope of offering better opportunities to their children, ages 16, 12 and 7, in a country with greater prospects for the future.

Robert worked as a teacher and administrator, and Odaysi in the postal company, but on the island, the income is insufficient to have a quality of life, for this reason, the couple decided to leave Cuba, looking for a better future for their children.

“In Spain the opportunities for children are much more favorable,” Robert commented in a telephone interview with the local press, in which he also highlighted that, although the adaptation was difficult at first, his children have already integrated into rural life. .

Villameriel, with an aging population and only eight children, has witnessed the effort of this family to establish themselves.

Robert and Odaysi run the village bar, while she also cares for the elderly.

Although they miss Cuban customs, they are grateful for the warmth with which they were received by the town’s residents, which has strengthened their decision to stay permanently.

The Cuban family is part of a group of 55 Latin American families who, in the last year, have moved to towns in empty Spain, thanks to the Arraigo Internacional project.
