Local fire brigade official Lee Hyun-ji said, “So far we have confirmed the death of 85 people, but the toll is likely to rise due to the number of serious injuries.”
She added that rescue teams are working to evacuate passengers from the back of the plane.
According to the Yonhap News Agency, “there were 175 passengers and six crew members on board the plane which suffered little damage.”
Yonhap cited authorities as saying the crash was caused by “bird contact, which caused a malfunction in the landing gear system” as the plane attempted to land at the airport.
The picture showed the tail of the plane on fire near the runway, with fire trucks and ambulances standing behind it.
Acting President Choi Sang-mok called for all resources to be put in place to rescue the passengers.
“All relevant agencies … must use all available resources to rescue” the plane’s unlucky passengers, Choi said in a statement.
