On Tuesday 29 October, in the Finance Committee of the National Assembly, deputies canceled the elimination of 4,000 teaching positions foreseen in the 2025 budget, giving a signal before the debates in the hemicycle. This is only a first warm-up on this “spending” part of the state budget, and all the amendments will have to be adopted again in the hemicycle, where the deputies will start again from the initial version.
The Assembly’s Finance Committee adopted the amendment of the deputy of La France insoumise (LFI), Paul Vannier. “The whole New Popular Front [NFP] voted”Vannier’s entourage assured Agence France-Presse.
According to him, “The demographic decline of schools, which has been underway for several years now and which will continue in the years to come, could allow France to finally reach the OECD average [Organisation pour la coopération et le développement économiques] ». And to specify: “In our country there are 22 students per class in primary school, compared to the OECD average of 19; at university it is 26 against 21. We must therefore at least maintain the number of teaching positions and we propose to create more. »
“True bloodshed”
The government announced on October 10 the elimination of 4,000 teaching posts during the presentation of the 2025 budget, arousing strong reactions from teachers’ unions who mentioned “real bloodshed”.
In detail of the fewer teaching positions, the first public level (nursery and primary schools) is the most affected with a drop of 3,155 places. According to the Ministry, the public secondary level (middle and high schools) has lost 180 places, the private primary level 660 and finally the private secondary level 40. To justify these job cuts, Rue de Grenelle highlights the decline in the number of students, “which is expected to accelerate with 97,000 fewer students at the start of the 2025 school year”.
However, the Minister of Education, Anne Genetet, stated this following the presentation of the budget “developments” are still possible during “parliamentary debate”.
