The driver involved in the accident in Sofia, in which a pedestrian died on the spot, rejects the accusations that he ran a red light.

Stefan, who witnessed the incident, was waiting with a concrete truck at a red light at the intersection between Vladimir Vazov Blvd. and Vasil Kanchev St. He says that a black car overtook him and collided with another car at the same time.

“The dark car ran a red light, hit the light one in the trunk, it spun around and hit a car in oncoming traffic, then hit the pedestrian and flipped onto the roof,” explained Stefan Ivanov.

The woman died on the spot. The driver of the black car, Borislav Georgiev, categorically denies that he ran a red light.

“I’m not in shock. I was driving normally and passed the green light. There was a car in front of me turning left and I was going straight when we hit each other. It is not possible that I ran a red light,” he told Bulgaria on Air.

The intersection where the accident occurred has temporary traffic management, but it has not been established whether this was the cause of the tragic accident.

Eyewitness Stefan adds that the traffic light was working inadequately. “Since 7am, my colleagues and I have been driving this route and the traffic light turns green for a few seconds, then turns red. Maybe the driver got nervous and ran a red light.”

The reasons for the incident are currently being clarified. All drivers involved in the crash were tested for alcohol and drugs, and the samples came back negative.
