The ECB increases Banco Santander’s minimum capital requirements for 2024

He European Central Bank (ECB) has decided to increase the minimum capital requirements required of Banco Santander for 2024, once the results of the supervisory review and evaluation process (PRES) have been obtained.

Thus, Santander Bank must comply with a minimum CET1 capital ratio of 9.60%, from 8.91% in 2023.

The most important changes in the CET1 capital ratio are a consequence of the additional requirement derived from the consideration of Santander Bank as ‘Other Entity of Systemic Importance’, which the Bank of Spain has increased by 25 basis points, to 1%. Likewise, the countercyclical buffer requirement has been increased to 0.3693%, from the previous 0.0253%.

Banco Santander’s total capital level is established at 13.86%, from 13.11% in 2023. At a consolidated level, the Pillar 2 requirement increases by 16 basis points, to 1.74%.

The new demands of the ECB are already met by the entity chaired by Ana Botínsince, as of September 30, its CET1 capital ratio was 12.35%, and total capital stood at 16.31%.
