The European Union is considering creating a new post of defense commissioner for the bloc to oversee the economic aspects of EU defense policy. The newspaper Politico writes about this with reference to sources, Day.Az reports with reference to Gazeta.ru.
“The EU is considering creating a new post of defense commissioner to oversee the industrial aspects of defense policy,” the publication reports.
As the newspaper notes, the current head of the Polish Foreign Ministry, Radoslaw Sikorski, is considered one of the likely candidates for a new position in the EU. According to Politico’s sources, “he definitely wants it.” Another contender is Estonian Prime Minister Kaja Kallas.
A European Commission spokesman and a senior official from a major EU country told the newspaper that while talk about the new position “has been serious”, discussions about its scope are “likely to be heated”.
