The European Union condemned the census announced by Russia in the annexed Crimea and the recent conscription of Crimeans into the Russian army. These measures are designed to legitimize the illegal annexation of the peninsula and further undermine the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders, a spokesman for the EU’s foreign policy said on Friday, October 15, in Brussels.

Brussels calls on Moscow to stop violating international law and international humanitarian norms in Crimea. Europe will continue to remain committed to non-recognition of the annexation and to make efforts to end it, the spokesman said.

EU sanctions against Russia

Only on October 11 did the European Union expand sanctions against Russia in connection with the conflict over Ukraine. Penalty measures were taken against eight more people – judges, prosecutors and security officials, who are responsible for the application of Russian laws in Crimea and Sevastopol. In general, there are already 185 individuals and 48 legal entities in the EU sanctions list. They are subject to visa bans, their property in the EU is frozen.

Russia plans to conduct a population census in Crimea from October 15 to November 14. In addition, on October 1, another conscription into the Russian army was announced in Crimea. According to Ukrainian media reports, since the annexation of Crimea in March 2014, more than 30,000 Ukrainian citizens have been drafted into the Russian army.
