The excavations at La Draga, finalists for the Palarq Foundation’s National Archeology Award

The excavations at the Draga site in Banyoles this year opt for the National Award for Archeology and Paleontology Fundación Palarq in quality of finalists of the third edition of the award called by the entity that gives it its name. Along with those of Abric Romaní, the two projects led by Catalan research teams are among the six finalists who will compete for the prize of 80,000 euros. The awards, created in 2018, want to recognize excellence and originality of archaeological and paleontological projects led by Spanish research teams. The delivery will be on June 15 at the National Archaeological Museum (MAN) in Madrid and will be attended by the Minister of Culture and Sport, Miquel Iceta.

Since the foundation, the study of the use of the Neanderthal wood which is being carried out by the team of the Catalan Institute of Human Paleoecology and Social Evolution made up of Dr. Palmira Saladié, Dr. Josep Vallverdú and Dr. María Gema Chacón. It is one of the most important Paleolithic sites medium and the “exceptional preservation of the wood will give new interpretations to the study of Neanderthals”.

They also point out that the study of the site, excavated continuously since 1983 in about 300 m2, has allowed the study of occupational patterns of the site over thousands of years. The aim of the project is the study of the remains of wood in the Pleistocene record, through the traces of use and wear observed in the lithic tools.

In the case of the work at the Draga de Banyoles site, the foundation highlights the new one research phase which seeks to understand the forms of organization of Neolithic communities based on the analysis of activity and the structuring of the inhabited space, as well as the reconstruction of the forms of subsistence. Researchers focus on the type of relationship maintained with domestic animal and plant species and the importance of wild species.

The work at this site in the Plan de l’Estany began 30 years ago and has allowed us to characterize the first farming populations that settled in the north-east of the peninsula, their environment and the impact they had on it.

The other finalist projects are the Almoloya-Bastida de Murcia project; Archeology in the city and territory of Tusculum (Italy); the Pintia project in the Ribera del Duero and the scientific study of the Tresor de Tomares.

The Palarq Foundation is one private entity and non-profit that was created with the purpose of supporting the Spanish Human Archeology and Paleontology Missions, within a perspective that covers from the paleontological stage to the prehistoric and historical periods of monumental interest.
