Interview: Time.news Editor Meets Children’s Literature Expert
Time.news Editor: Welcome to our special segment. Today, we’re thrilled to have with us Dr. Emilia Torres, a renowned expert in children’s literature and an advocate for educational programs that foster a love for reading among youth. Dr. Torres, thank you for joining us!
Dr. Emilia Torres: Thank you for having me! I’m excited to discuss the upcoming International Children’s and Youth Book Fair, or FILIJ, as it’s affectionately known.
Editor: It’s just around the corner, from November 8 to 18! What makes FILIJ one of the most anticipated cultural events of the year?
Dr. Torres: FILIJ is not only a celebration of children’s and youth literature but also a gathering of diverse creators and audiences. This year’s edition will take place in the picturesque Chapultepec Forest, which adds a beautiful backdrop to the event. It provides an opportunity for young readers to connect with authors, illustrators, and various artists who are passionate about literature.
Editor: That sounds incredible! I’ve read that there will be 74 houses participating, which includes a mix of publishers, authors, and diverse artists. How important is this diversity for the festival?
Dr. Torres: It’s essential! Diversity fosters creativity and allows children to see themselves represented in literature. When young readers have access to stories from various cultures and perspectives, it broadens their understanding of the world. Plus, having various formats — like puppet theater and circus shows — makes literature more dynamic and engaging for them.
Editor: Speaking of engagement, what kind of activities can attendees expect? I hear there will be workshops and artistic presentations?
Dr. Torres: Absolutely! FILIJ will feature five forums dedicated to a plethora of activities, including editorial presentations, storytelling sessions, and even workshops led by authors and illustrators. There are also seminars and conferences that delve into crucial topics in children’s literature, all aimed at inspiring both children and adults.
Editor: It sounds like a brilliant way to promote literacy and creativity. How do you think events like FILIJ impact the local community and education?
Dr. Torres: Events like FILIJ create a culture of reading and learning in the community. They allow for interaction that goes beyond the classroom and encourage collaboration between schools, families, and artists. The attendees not only gain exposure to new ideas and inspirations but also become part of a larger reading community that values creativity and education.
Editor: That’s an inspiring perspective! Could you share a bit about your personal connection to the fair or how it has evolved over the years?
Dr. Torres: I’ve attended FILIJ for many years, and it has always been a delightful experience. Over time, I’ve witnessed its growth from a local fair to an internationally recognized event that attracts educators, authors, and families from all walks of life. Each year, the fair evolves, reflecting current trends in literature while remaining grounded in the joy of reading.
Editor: As we move closer to the event, what would you say to families who are considering attending?
Dr. Torres: I would encourage them to seize this chance! Bring your children, explore the stalls, participate in the workshops, and enjoy the performances. It’s a fantastic opportunity to kindle their interest in reading and to inspire a lifelong love for stories. Plus, it’s a fun day out in the beautiful Chapultepec Forest!
Editor: Thank you, Dr. Torres, for your insights. We can’t wait to see the magic of FILIJ unfold this November!
Dr. Torres: Thank you for having me! Let’s spread the word and make this event unforgettable for every child.
