“I fear that we have not been told everything” about the budget situation, says Gérard Larcher, convinced that Bruno Le Maire and Emmanuel Macron have ignored the alarms
“A number of questions arise about the sincerity of what was presented to us in the fall of 2023 and what we were told in the spring,” by the Macronist government, on the management of public accounts and the widening of the deficit, Senate President Gérard Larcher declared to CNews-Europe 1 on Thursday morning. Please note that this year the deficit is expected to be 6.1%. of GDP, and not the 5.1% expected by the previous government in April.
“I’m afraid we haven’t been told everything” added Gérard Larcher, before making an estimate “The Minister of Economy and Finance [Bruno Le Maire] but also the President of the Republic” they ignored warnings about the drift of the deficit and public spending.
Gérard Larcher, Republican MP (LR), then recalled his support for the government led by Michel Barnier, also a member of the right-wing party, as well as for the budget project he presented, while critical voices were raised, even on the right , regarding the increase in some taxes and duties on the incomes of the richest families. “ The priority is the reduction of public spending, not the increase in taxes, but we clearly see that the sum of the two, for the year 2025, is necessary”given the economic situation in France, said Mr. Larcher.
The president of the Senate also gave his support to Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau on the issue of immigration, while the former president of the LR senators declared last week that he “don’t deviate[ait] no a priori solution”, on centers for the transfer of illegal migrants outside the European Union (EU). Gérard Larcher also believes that a new immigration law is needed in 2025 – while the provisions of the latest one, adopted last year, are not yet all applied – contrary to former prime minister Gabriel Attal.
