Innovation in Electric Vehicles: The First Sodium Battery Car Hits the Streets in January
After years of anticipation, sodium batteries, considered the revolutionary alternative to lithium batteries, [ 2 ], finally become a reality with the presentation of the first electric car equipped with this technology. JAC Motors, backed by Volkswagen and its newly created brand, Yiwei, stands out as a pioneer in this advancement that promises to change the landscape of electric vehicles.
The Yiwei EV model, based on the Sehol E10X launched earlier this year, features a sodium-ion battery manufactured by HiNA. The autonomy of this vehicle reaches approximately 252 kilometers with a 25 kWh and 120 Wh/kg battery. JAC uses its own modular structure to assemble these sodium batteries, marking a milestone in technological development.
The charging process is also notable, with a 3C to 4C charging capacity that promises to go from 10% to 80% in just 20 minutes. Although the price of this specific version has not yet been revealed, it is expected to offer a more affordable alternative to lithium battery models.
Although sodium batteries have a lower energy density compared to lithium batteries, their advantage lies in their lower cost and greater thermal stability.
