The official trailer for Todd Philipps’ highly anticipated “Joker” has just been revealed. And it sets the tone for this psychological drama, which describes the slow but irremediable descent into hell of this cult character from the Batman and DC Comics universe.
It’s a gaunt Joaquin Phoenix who slips into the shoes of Arthur Fleck, a failed and outcast clown, who descends into crime and madness. “My mother tells me to smile and look good. And that I have a mission: to bring laughter and joy to the world,” he explains on the streets of an unhealthy and disturbing Gotham City of the 80s.
“Before I thought my life was tragic. I understand that it’s comical”, jokes the Joker again to the tune of “Smile”, by Nat King Cole. The first dark and distressing images, the publication of which was announced on Tuesday by the director himself on his website Instagram accountwith the first poster of the film, inviting us to “get ready [notre] the most beautiful smile.”
Expected on October 9th on French screens, the film brings together Robert de Niro, Zazie Beetz (“Deadpool”) and Shea Whigham (“Boardwalk Empire”).
