The Bulgarian Food Safety Agency (BFSA) is introducing additional measures against the spread of small ruminant pox in certain areas of the country from today.
In the regions of Yambol, Haskovo and Stara Zagora, until November 30, 2024, grazing, trade, movement and transport of small ruminants, except those for immediate slaughter or transit, are prohibited. Slaughter will only be allowed after a clinical examination by an official veterinarian and laboratory testing of samples. The movement of the animals will be carried out along a pre-approved route, without stopping, with mandatory disinfection of the means of transport. For this purpose, a permit regime is being introduced, and the permits will be issued by the Regional Directorates for Food Safety (ODBH).
In the regions of Burgas, Kardjali, Smolyan, Blagoevgrad and Sliven, until November 30, 2024, the slaughter of animals is permitted under the same conditions, and grazing remains permitted for the time being.
The directors of the ODBH must organize epizootic commissions and take all necessary measures to prevent the spread of the disease. Control over the movement of animals and biosecurity on farms will be strengthened.
In case of suspected disease, samples will be taken for examination, and in case of violations, the animals will be killed, and the owners will be subject to sanctions.
The disease is not dangerous for humans, but it is extremely dangerous for sheep and goats and can lead to great economic losses.
