The Basque Country Pensioners Movement (MPEH) returns to the streets this Monday. After the summer break, the platform that has been vindicating the defense and improvement of benefits, with measures such as the request for a minimum item in its allocation of 1,080 euros, will mobilize again on the 4th and 11th of this month. They will do so within the protests that they have been carrying out for 69 weeks now in more than 80 towns around the Basque Country.

«Before the elections we addressed the parties to include our basic demands in their electoral programs. After these we do it again so that our proposals are included in the government program, “he said in a statement in which they summon the usual squares of Bilbao, Irún and Vitoria. In the Biscayan capital the appointment will be again at 12:00 noon, on the stairs of the town hall building.

The platform has warned that the problems of pensioners “have not disappeared” and have warned about the worsening of living conditions due to the “increasing” costs. “The increase in prices makes it increasingly difficult for us to access healthy food and medicines, decent housing conditions that guarantee mobility and an adequate temperature, access to social and health services for dependency care, etc.” they have listed.

Claims

With an estimated year-on-year CPI of 2.6% in August and a core inflation rate (excluding unprocessed food and energy products) of 6.1%, the group denounces the problems to maintain their living conditions with minimum pensions that continue below 1,080 euros, while some companies “break profit records”. In this context, the platform warns that the loss of purchasing power of the group was 8.8% until 2022, of which they would only recover 4% if the CPI closed this year at the same value. Ending the gender gap, repealing the reducing coefficients of early retirement with 40 years of contributions or eliminating possible pension plans that could promote the privatization of benefits are part of other claims that have been raised.

“We will report our demands immediately to the political groups in Congress. We will demand a position from the parliaments of Navarre and the Basque Country regarding the supplementary report for 1080 euros that we have delivered. We know that mobilization continues to be our guarantee to achieve our goals and we will do so,” they claimed.
