From Kfar Saba to Italy: Holocaust survivor and resident of the city, Edith Fischhof Gilboa, who is turning 100 years old – went to represent Kfar Saba at the commemoration ceremony of the Hasidim of the Nations in Italy. Edith and her sister Truda, were saved thanks to Giuseppe Impoletti, a resident of Italy who risked his life for them. The amazing story of Fischhof Gilboa, a Holocaust survivor who immigrated to Israel 25 years ago straight to Kfar Saba, is a story of family, giving, fighting spirit and great courage. She left for Italy last Thursday, for a ceremony that took place in the town of Pontevico in the province of Brescia in Italy, to commemorate Giuseppe Impoletti, who, as mentioned, saved her life and the life of her sister. At the ceremony, the local police played the national anthem Hatikva, in honor of Edith.

Edith was born in Italy in June 1923. After the racial laws were passed in Italy, she and her family had to flee their home and wander as refugees. At some point, Edith and her sister Berta met Giuseppe Impolti, who decided to give them shelter and gathered them into his home, presenting them as his cousins. The two hid from the Nazi killing machine on Giuseppe’s farm throughout the war, thus essentially saving their lives.

“I live with the feeling of a great mission and do everything possible to tell my story and that of my family members, and the story of the Jewish people,” said Edith with considerable excitement. “Unfortunately, in recent years we have witnessed the resurgence of anti-Semitism in Europe, among others in Italy, where I travel, and I feel a great obligation to travel again to tell and remember what we went through in the Holocaust, so that it does not happen again. I am happy and proud to be a resident of Kfar Saba and to represent it at the ceremony As someone who has seen the world, for me, Kfar Saba does not need compliments, it is one of the most beautiful and best places to live and live in the world.”

The day before she flew to Italy, Edith met with Mayor Rafi Sa’ar, who said: “Edith is a woman you meet maybe once in a lifetime. I met an eloquent, sharp, smart, bright-faced and smiling woman. The true pride of a resident. Edith’s story is a story that proves that even in the most difficult times Darkness, some people do not lose their moral compass. Spirits of human solidarity blow even when all around evil tries to destroy every part of good. I heard her story from her mouth, before her trip to Italy and I don’t remember when I was so moved. The meeting with Edith, her story and the woman she made me into A real chill. This is the story of our people, who managed to rise from the dust and establish a national home, this is a story of people who decided to risk their lives to save the lives of people they don’t know, this is a story of the human spirit that will always win.”
