In the first 8 months of 2024, the total volume of direct gas flow through the Greece-Bulgaria Interconnector (IGB) was over 7 billion kWh, while the total volume of interrupted reverse flow was 1.2 billion kWh.
As Day.Az reports, this was stated in response to a request from Trend at the ICGB AD company, which is the pipeline operator.
“In August, the direct flow volume was more than 723 million kWh, and the interrupted reverse flow volume was 270.7 million kWh,” a company source said.
Regarding hydrogen research, the ICGB noted that the issue remains on the agenda for the long term, but for now the focus is on the expansion project.
It should be noted that the IGB connects to the national gas transmission system of Greece (DESFA SA) and the Trans Adriatic Pipeline (TAP AG) in the Komotini region (Greece), as well as with the Bulgarian gas transmission system (Bulgartransgaz EAD) in the Stara Zagora region.
The total length of the gas pipeline is 182 km, the pipe diameter is 32 inches, and the design capacity is up to 3 billion cubic meters per year in the Greece-Bulgaria direction.
Depending on market demand for increased capacity and the capabilities of neighboring gas transmission systems, IGB’s design capacity could be increased to 5 billion cubic meters per year through the construction of an additional compressor station.
