DECRYPTION – In the first part of its latest report published in 2021, the IPCC recalls that “human-caused climate change is already affecting many weather and climate extremes in all regions of the world”.

Reunion Island was hit by a very violent cyclone on Monday. The island has not experienced such a phenomenon since 2014 and the passage of Bejisa. But the inhabitants above all feared a cataclysm of the magnitude of that experienced in 1989 when cyclone Firinga crossed the island from one side to the other, which caused heavy material and human damage. Fortunately, the worst is never certain: when it hit the northern coasts of the island on Monday morning, Cyclone Belal had not reached a level of major intensity (category 3 or more on the Saffir-Simpson).

And it ultimately did not exceed category 2, that of moderate intensity, notes Gilles Matricon, meteorologist for La Chaîne Météo.
