Iraq‘s security forces have killed the leader of the “Islamic State” in the country, Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani announced today, quoted by DPA and BTA.
In addition to the leader of the “Islamic State” in Iraq, during a “heroic operation” in the Hamreen mountains, eight other high-ranking figures in the group were killed, the prime minister said. “There is no place for terrorists in Iraq,” said As Sudani.
According to the Iraqi armed forces, the dead leader of the Islamic State was Jassim al-Masrawi Abu Abdel Qadir. The others have not been named but may be identified after DNA tests, the military said.
Security forces recovered large quantities of arms, ammunition and equipment during the operation, as well as premises for the manufacture of explosive devices.
Islamic State years ago controlled nearly 40 percent of Iraq and about a third of neighboring Syria before it was defeated militarily.
However, the grouping has not completely disappeared. According to US Central Command, there are about 2,500 remaining fighters in both countries who continue to carry out attacks.
