Is that…? Sure enough, there’s a keyhole peeking out from the headboard of the bed. And the narrow side table on which the television sits… A dining table cut in half, the second half is directly opposite in the living area. There are hangers with crocheted dresses hanging on the coat rack, cut-off wine bottles instead of glasses next to the sink, and an illustrated travel guide from 1987 on the bookshelf. “One of the few old suburban streets in Vienna,” it says about Ungargasse, in which the magdas hotel is located. “Lined with a few restaurants, in between a small shop with curious antique postcards, old stamps and other junk.” The shop no longer exists, and the priest’s dormitory, house number 38, is also history. The last priests, all over 80 years old, moved out a few years ago. Luckily for magdas, which was looking for a new, this time permanent, home after seven pop-up years at the Vienna Prater.

It’s not just the facility that’s sustainable, but the entire company model. The magdas is a social business hotel run by the Vienna Caritas. 40 people from 14 nations work there, two thirds of whom have a refugee background. You get training and jobs and, very importantly: a perspective.
