Suspicions of ‘Pyongyang drone’ and military-level distribution of anti-North Korea leaflets remain ‘unconfirmable’
In response to suspicions that our military carried out the so-called ‘North Wind Operation’ to induce provocations from North Korea, he again emphasized that “this is not true and cannot happen.”
At a regular briefing on the 2nd, Lee Seong-jun, head of the Joint Chiefs of Staff’s Public Affairs Office, responded to the question, ‘There are reports that the military’s psychological warfare group distributed anti-North Korea leaflets last year.’ “It’s not appropriate,” he said.
Recently, it was reported that our military resumed loudspeaker broadcasts against North Korea in June last year and began distributing anti-North Korea leaflets. In particular, claims were made that the frequency and quantity of anti-North Korea leaflet distribution increased from September last year, when former Minister of National Defense Kim Yong-hyun took office, until just before the ‘December 3 Emergency Martial Law’.
Accordingly, the opposition is raising the possibility of the ‘North Wind Operation’, in which our military produced and distributed anti-North Korea leaflets and induced provocations from North Korea to justify martial law.
Director Lee, however, said, “If the military had carried out activities to induce provocations by the enemy, when (North Korea’s) Gyeongui Line and Donghae Line were blown up, a lot of fragments would have passed over to the South, and then they would have fired at North Korea.” He added, “Why did they let such a good opportunity go?” “Did we only fire warning shots toward the south?” he asked.
Director Lee continued, “Our military is carrying out activities to protect the people and protect their lives and safety, and is not carrying out activities to induce provocations from the enemy.”
In addition, Director Lee said that the opposition party claimed that the incident last October in which North Korea claimed that a South Korean drone infiltrated Pyongyang was under the direction of the National Security Office, and that the Security Office bypassed the Ministry of National Defense and the Joint Chiefs of Staff, which are official orders, and directly ordered the deployment to the Drone Operation Command. Regarding the allegations, he said, “We cannot confirm the same as our existing position.”
