See you again in Athens
The scaffolding is still there, you can see it from the bed. When I first visited Athens 42 years ago, the Acropolis was already scaffolded. During every stay in the meantime, this scaffolding stood somewhere at the Parthenon. Sometimes left, sometimes right. Sometimes in front, sometimes behind. Somehow it now seems like an old friend, the scaffolding. You almost want to shout “Kalimera!” to him from the bed by the window.
Or better: whisper it – you don’t want to wake anyone up. “The Dolli” in its magnificent classicist building is certainly one of the quietest hotels you can stay in the Greek capital. It’s in Plaka, and Athens’ old town is one of the most well-visited areas in Europe, even in winter.
But in Dolli you don’t hear any of the hustle and bustle in the streets with their souvenir shops and taverns and cruise ship crowds. Not even at night. Then the only sound comes from a cicada, chirping bravely against the chill of the night on a window ledge outside. If you go into the bathroom, the light barrier-controlled toilet lid hums quietly when opened. There is nothing else there, just peace, just silence. And the Acropolis, illuminated amber. You could stand at the window for hours, sipping your red wine and looking up at her.
