In a speech on the occasion of the opening of the fall session of the 45th International Cultural moussem of Assilah, organized under the high patronage of HM King Mohammed VI, Mr. Benaissa stressed that this edition vigorously reaffirms its attachment to the intellectual principles which shape its essence, as a space for reflection and open debate, which tackles major current issues, both at the Arab, continental and international level, and rigorously explores the perspectives that they open up.
This edition also reaffirms moussem’s commitment to raising both the level and the intensity of public debate, with the association of five major conferences, each addressing burning issues that pose complex issues for elites, people and to decision-makers, both on the Arab and international levels, he continued.
In this sense,Mr. Benaissa specified that the first conference is devoted to the delicate issue of borders in Africa and the major challenges they raise, noting that “this subject, of particular sensitivity, is of capital importance due to the fact of its profound political implications, affecting the sovereignty of States, their national identity, as well as their inalienable right to preserve and restore the integrity of their territories.
The border crisis in Africa raises issues affecting sovereignty and national unity, and shakes the very foundations of the existence of nations, he stressed, indicating that the causes of this crisis, numerous and closely intertwined, have not been treated with the rigor and fairness required, often disregarding historical and geographical realities.
“This deficiency has opened the way for certain states and regimes to exploit the legacy left by the colonial era for expansionist purposes. Even more alarming, thes regimes are working to perpetuate situations resulting from the arbitrary sharing of Africa by the colonial powers,” he said.
In this context, the secretary general of the Assilah Forum Foundation recalled the ”deeply unjust” decision adopted in 1963 during the founding summit of the Organization of African Unity (OAU), which ratified the colonial borders and which has fueled latent tensions and stimulated expansionist ambitions on the part of certain regimes, affirming that the resolution of this situation can only come about thru an enlightened approach, based on the principles of fraternity and cooperation, by putting put forward the common interest rather than the use of force and expansionism.
In line with the commitment of the Moussem of Assilah to explore the most pressing issues on the international scene, with a particular emphasis on the realities of the South, this edition will devote the themes of justice and the mechanisms of democratic systems, and also only Arab elites from the diaspora, he explained.
“Moreover, keen to deepen our understanding of the complex dynamics between religion and politics, the Moussem of Assilah will organize this year a conference dedicated to the study of religious movements and their impact on the political sphere,” said Mr. Benaissa.
he further noted that this edition stands out for the organization of two conferences, in partnership with the Policy Center for the New South, including one devoted to artificial intelligence and the modalities of governance to be adopted in africa. in the digital age, while the second will address the crucial issue of cultural inclusion and the reduction of inequalities in the field of employment.
In order to celebrate literary creation in all its forms, the “Khaimat Al Ibdaa (The Tent of Creativity)” space will also host a conference in tribute to Mohammed Achaari, eminent writer, poet, journalist and former Minister of Culture ,and which will be dedicated to the in-depth analysis of his literary works as well as his journalistic writings,he noted.
Moussem will also offer literary expression and writing workshops for children, in addition to visual arts workshops led by Moroccan, Arab and international artists.
