The Girona artist – this is how he considered himself despite being born in Andalusia- Pau Baena he died yesterday at the age of 62, a year after he was diagnosed with a serious illness.
Pau Baena was born in Baena (Córdoba) but with only nine years he arrived in Girona. He trained with Domènec Fita and studied at the Royal Catalan Academy of Fine Arts of Sant Jordi, in Barcelona. Then he obtained a grant from the Generalitat to go to Rome and Milan (Italy) to carry out a project related to futurism. At the same time, he trained in industrial and graphic design.
Pau Baena was one multidisciplinary artist who worked in the fields of flat and three-dimensional painting, design and restoration. His body of work explored tradition through the intersection of anatomy, emotion and reflection.
He had a very careful technique and always defended the communicative capacity of painting
He obtained a degree in Fine Arts from the University of Barcelona focusing on plastic arts techniques and painting. Later, he specialized in printmaking in Paris and design in Milan, where he was influenced by classical Roman art to contemporary cultural movements.
He lived first-hand the creative and political effervescence of Girona in the eighties, surely for this reason he was always a defender of the communicative capacity of painting. Despite possessing a very careful technique learned from the study of the classics, he never put it at the service of empty virtuosity, but of lived experience and a critical look at the contemporary world.
During his career, Pau Baena exhibited at the Vila Casas Foundation and the Engelhorn Foundation, among others. His work is in the art fund of the Generalitat de Catalunya and in the collections of the Art Museum and History Museum of Girona and the Uppsala Art Museum (Sweden).
