The collection of pile carpets of the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum has been enriched with another valuable example of art. Colonel Aghalar Aliyev, a veteran of the First Karabakh War, donated the “Fish” carpet from the beginning of the 20th century to the museum.

Day.Az reports that A. Aliyev said that it was woven in Shusha in honor of the birth of his grandmother Khurshud Aliyeva, who was born in 1896, and that she was given a dowry when starting a family. I decided that the most reliable place to protect it is not our house, but the National Carpet Museum of Azerbaijan.”

The director of the museum, Amina Malikova, expressed her gratitude to Aghalar Aliyev for his noble behavior. He said that the carpet will be conserved by the experts of the museum and will be protected at a high level. Mrs. Amina reminded that the first exhibit acquired by the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum in 1967 was the “Fish” carpet.

Then Khadija Asadova, the scientific secretary of the National Carpet Museum of Azerbaijan, gave information about the “Balig” carpet: “This is one of the most famous examples in Azerbaijan. Although the “Balig” carpet is woven in all the carpet-weaving centers of Karabakh, its main production center was the city of Barda. And since the 20th century, carpets woven in Shusha have been woven. 70 percent of them were carpets with “Fish” flavor. Due to the arc-shaped petals on them, carpets with such an artistic structure were called “Mahi” (fish) in South Azerbaijan.
