/ The Pentagon announced, on Tuesday, that US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is undergoing treatment for prostate cancer, after he faced criticism for delaying several days before informing the White House of his admission to the hospital.

The Pentagon said that Austin’s “prostate cancer was discovered early and his prognosis was excellent,” but he later had to be readmitted to the intensive care unit due to “complications,” including a feeling of nausea and severe pain in the abdomen, hip, and leg.

The Walter Trade National Military Medical Center in the United States said that US Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin (70 years old) underwent surgery on December 22 after an examination revealed that he had prostate cancer.

Doctors said that his recent secret admission to the hospital was to undergo surgery and later to treat a urinary tract infection related to this operation.

Austin became infected a week later, and senior administration and defense officials were not informed for several days about his hospitalization or cancer.

Prostate cancer is the most common cause of cancer among American men, affecting 1 in 8 men – and 1 in 6 African-American men – during their lifetime.

Despite the recurrence of prostate cancer, discussions about screening, treatment and support are often very personal and private.

Early screening is important for detecting and treating prostate cancer, and people should talk to their doctors to find out which screening is right for them.
