The Libyan People’s Voice Party condemned the statements of the head of the European Union mission to Libya, Nicolas Orlando, on the issue of illegal immigration.
In a statement, a copy of which was obtained by “Ain Libya”, the party said, addressing the European ambassador: “You came out to us on March 31, 2024, through your page on the (X) website, to give us sermons and lessons on humanity and human rights, at a time when Europe is going through a real crisis related to the issue of… “Migration, it has acted with a condescending attitude, relying on a comprehensive EU-backed approach to migration that it wants to implement in Libya, which it claims includes development in countries of origin, life-saving partnerships, human rights-compliant border management, and combating human smuggling.”
The party added: “But we see glaring contradictions in this discourse. This approach, which claims to support human rights, ignores the actual practices of the Italian government under the leadership of Giorgia Meloni, which deals with the issue of illegal immigration from a purely security perspective, which only serves its political interests, ignoring Human rights principles.”
The statement indicated that on October 19, 2024, Italian Interior Minister Matteo Salvini made a scandalous statement bragging about his decisions that conflict with human values. He said, “I am proud of what I did as a minister and as an Italian, I will find out if I am guilty of kidnapping people because I stopped illegal immigration operations.”
The party noted that this statement blatantly reflects the politicization of a humanitarian issue, as it refers to its decision to keep 147 migrants on board a ship belonging to the “Open Arms” organization for more than three weeks, refusing to receive them in Italy. Moreover, it announced on October 21, 2024 its intention to return Migrants to Libya, after about 170 migrants who were rescued from the sea were refused to disembark on a ship anchored in the port of Catania in Sicily.
The People’s Voice Party asked: “How can the European Union talk about human rights while its government is silent about these terrible violations?”
The party pointed out that these policies are not just a violation of human rights, but rather are direct complicity in violations against humanity, and they reflect the double standards practiced by your governments.
The People’s Voice Party announced its rejection of this hypocrisy and demanded that human rights principles be an integral part of any immigration policy.
The party continued: “We consider this situation a danger to humanity, and we call on you to review your positions and stop supporting governments that ignore human rights in order to achieve their political interests.”
The party concluded its statement by saying: “How long will you continue to ignore these facts?” We call on you to act now, work to save what can be saved and defend the rights of migrants, instead of justifying the practices of governments that do not adhere to the principles of humanity.”
