A strategic shift from the classic pharmaceutical business to lifestyle has paid off for the Merz family business. The fight against wrinkles drives sales and still offers a lot of new potential.

Whether for the small frown lines between the eyebrows, the smile lines in the corners of the eyes that deepen with age, or sagging facial skin: In the age of social media and fueled beauty mania, a bright future is opening up for manufacturers of wrinkle-smoothing preparations and other non-surgical rejuvenation methods. The still young market for aesthetics is a billion-dollar business in which a German family business, the pharmaceutical manufacturer Merz behind the Botox group Allergan and the Swiss Galderma, is also heavily involved.

The 115-year-old pharmaceutical company is better known for its Merz special dragees, the nutritional supplements for “beauty from within” from the drugstore, and the Tetesept baths. Billions have been made over many years from the Alzheimer’s drug Memantine. That plays only a minor role today. When its patents threatened to expire, a new strategy was needed and so a Botox-like preparation, skin fillers and skin tightening with ultrasound waves now account for the lion’s share of sales for the company, which is still rooted in Frankfurt.
