In a significant collaboration between Colombia and the United States, the National Police today received 4 Black Hawk helicopters, thus completing a fleet of 12 aircraft donated by the US government to strengthen environmental surveillance and the fight against illegal activities that seriously affect the ecosystems of the country.
The official delivery of the helicopters took place in a ceremony attended by the United States ambassador to Colombia, Francisco L.. Palmieri, the director of the Office of International Narcotics and Law Enforcement Affairs (INL), Kevin Murakami, and the director general of the National Police, General William Salamanca Ramírez.
General Salamanca highlighted the importance of these helicopters for the country, pointing out that they will be fundamental in the protection of natural areas protected areas, surveillance of rural areas, and support for operations against illegal mining and deforestation. “We thank the American government for the support represented by these aircraft that strengthen the aerial capacity of the National Police, particularly for the purpose of protecting the environment,” Salamanca stated.

The Black Hawk helicopters, known for their resilience and ability to operate in extreme conditions, will be essential to detect and dismantle illegal activities that negatively affect key ecosystems for climate regulation, the water cycle and the conservation of biodiversity in Colombia. These aircraft will allow authorities to quickly access remote areas, facilitating the response to forest fires and collaborating in the rescue of endangered wildlife.
Advanced technology and operational capabilities
Each of the helicopters has the capacity to transport up to 15 passengers and is equipped with Bambi-Bucket systemswhich can transport up to 600 gallons of water, ideal for fighting forest fires. Additionally, Black Hawks can reach speeds of up to 193 knots and operate at an altitude of 20,000 feet, characteristics that make them especially valuable for operations in difficult terrain and mountainous areas.
Support for COP16 in Cali
The arrival of these helicopters reinforces the preparation of the National Police to provide security and logistical support during the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (COP16), which will be held in Cali from October 21 to November 1, 2024. According to General Salamanca, the helicopters will ensure an immediate and timely reaction to any government request during the event, which brings together delegates from around the world to discuss the protection of global biodiversity.
