Time.news Editor: Welcome to this special interview segment. Today, we have the privilege of speaking with Dr. Sarah Al-Mansoori, an expert in international development and a consultant for various UN initiatives. Dr. Al-Mansoori, thank you for joining us today.
Dr. Al-Mansoori: Thank you for having me. It’s a pleasure to be here.
Time.news Editor: Recently, Iraqi President Abdul Latif Gamal Rashid emphasized the urgent need to address the issue of displacement during his meeting with UNDP Director Achim Steiner at COP29. How significant is this focus on displacement in Iraq, especially in the context of global climate change?
Dr. Al-Mansoori: It’s extremely significant. Displacement often stems from conflict and environmental factors, and Iraq has been particularly vulnerable. The increase in climate change impacts—such as droughts, floods, and extreme weather—exacerbates existing challenges. Addressing displacement is not just about providing shelter but also about creating sustainable solutions that consider future climates.
Time.news Editor: In the same meeting, partnership between the Iraqi government and the UNDP was highlighted as a focal point for development. How crucial are these partnerships in strengthening Iraq’s economic and social policies?
Dr. Al-Mansoori: Partnerships like these are vital. They bring in expertise, resources, and credibility. The UNDP can help Iraq not only in crafting effective policies but also in ensuring that these policies are implemented through best practices learned from other nations. It’s about leveraging external support while building local capacity.
Time.news Editor: The President also mentioned attracting foreign investments and creating job opportunities as part of this development agenda. What challenges does Iraq face in creating an investment-friendly environment, and how can these obstacles be overcome?
Dr. Al-Mansoori: Iraq faces several challenges, including political instability, bureaucratic hurdles, and security issues. To overcome these, Iraq needs to enhance its regulatory framework, ensure political stability, and promote transparent processes. Additionally, showcasing successful projects can help build trust and attract foreign investors.
Time.news Editor: Given that the private sector was mentioned as crucial for economic revival, what steps should the Iraqi government take to activate and support this sector effectively?
Dr. Al-Mansoori: The government should create a favorable business climate by simplifying regulations, providing incentives for startups, and ensuring access to finance. It’s also important to invest in education and vocational training to equip the workforce with the necessary skills. Supporting local entrepreneurs can lead to sustainable growth and resilience in the economy.
Time.news Editor: There’s a strong link between climate action and economic development, as seen in the discussions at COP29. In your view, how can Iraq integrate climate change considerations into its development policies?
Dr. Al-Mansoori: Iraq must prioritize climate adaptation strategies that align with its economic development goals. This includes investing in renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and water management practices. Integrating climate resilience into all levels of policy-making ensures that development is sustainable and can withstand the impacts of climate change.
Time.news Editor: Lastly, what message do you hope to convey to both the Iraqi leadership and the international community regarding the future of Iraq?
Dr. Al-Mansoori: My message would be one of hope and collaboration. Iraq has immense potential, and with the right partnerships, both domestically and internationally, it can emerge stronger from its challenges. Let’s work together in a way that prioritizes sustainable development and the well-being of its citizens.
Time.news Editor: Thank you, Dr. Al-Mansoori, for your insights today. It’s clear that while challenges exist, there’s a path forward for Iraq that prioritizes people and the planet.
Dr. Al-Mansoori: Thank you for having me. It’s crucial that we continue these conversations and promote actionable solutions.
