BOLZANO. The Provincial Committee for Order and Security, chaired by the government commissioner, Vito Cusumano, examined and evaluated the safety devices provided for the protection of the Christmas markets in the main towns of Alto Adige. Having taken note of the installation, by the municipal administrations of Bolzano and Merano, of special barriers in the places where the traditional Christmas markets take place, according to a note, the need was assessed to “further increase the effectiveness of the measures of existing safety and general prevention” and “similar structures have been placed at the gates of the Bressanone Christmas market, strengthening, at the same time, the supply of deterrents in the capital and in Merano, for greater protection of the pedestrian areas themselves”.
Furthermore, “the possibilities of vehicular access have been restricted through the adoption of specific technical measures”. “In the affected sites – continues the note – the necessary services have been set up to ensure constant supervision by additional law enforcement units, even in plain clothes, and municipal police personnel”. Finally, it was decided to strengthen security measures also during public events at the end of the year which will be defined in specific technical meetings.
