On April 28, 2024, the premiere of the play “Woyzeck” based on the play of the same name by the German poet and playwright Georg Büchner will take place on the stage of the Azerbaijan State Academic Russian Drama Theater in Baku, the press service of the theater told Day.Az.

The stage director of the play is People’s Artist of Azerbaijan Alexander Sharovsky.

The drama is based on a real event – a criminal case of murder that occurred on June 26, 1821. A detailed description of the case was published in a medical newspaper with which Buchner’s father, a doctor by profession, collaborated. Georg Büchner changed the characters and social status of his heroes and the result was a drama with social content: on the one hand, representatives of the working masses who have to agree to crazy experiments just to earn a little living, and on the other hand, doctors and captains who can afford the luxury of being virtuous? and drum majors with a sense of their own uniqueness and permissiveness.

This is a psychedelic drama about an ordinary soldier, tortured by military drill and medical experiments, who loses his sanity and begins to experience strange visions. Woyzeck is a pathetic, downtrodden man who has become a victim of power, wealth and nature.

The play demonstrates how gradually, under the influence of failure and hunger, an uncontrollable desire to kill appears in the mind of a little man. Before us unfolds the tragedy of a person with a pure spiritual essence, which, under the influence of circumstances and cruel reality, is realized in a crime. By killing Mary, the hero, as he himself believes, is thereby trying to cleanse her of sin. The play depicts with stunning depth a process in which two creatures with initially good inclinations become the bargaining chips – a wonderful girl who made an unforgivable mistake under the yoke of poverty, and a kind, quiet man who turned into a killer due to terrifying circumstances. The inevitability of this outcome is revealed with extraordinary convincingness.

The play leaves viewers with deep reflections on the nature of human cruelty and helplessness. It remains relevant and exciting even many years after its creation, continuing to amaze with its strength and depth.
