lunar module Luna-25the first Russian probe designed for its lunar landing in almost 50 years, has suspended its preliminary maneuver to reach the satellite this Saturday due to a technical failure.

Although the ship managed to enter the orbit this Saturday of the satellite, the Russian space agency Roscosmos has reported an error that occurred in moving the module to the pre-moon landing position, reports EP.

“During the operation, an emergency situation arose on board the automatic station, which did not allow the maneuver to be carried out with the specified parameters,” the agency said in a statement published on its Telegram account. “The team is currently analyzing the situation,” the agency added.

Moon-25, which does not have a return capsule, tries to become the first station in history to land on the South Pole of the Moon. The main tasks of the mission are to test soft landing technologies, study the internal structure, and explore resources, including water.

Russia launched the ship last week in a race with the US agency, NASA, and other space agencies, and in principle the moon landing was scheduled for this coming Sunday, although it is not known if the plan is still on.

The lunar south pole is a highly coveted target among nations that carry out space activities, the US and China among them. In fact, the Indian spacecraft Chandrayaan-3 is orbiting the Moon and will likely attempt a near-pole landing this week.
