The Girona counties have closed the month of August with the registration of 840 cars, 11.26% more than those registered a year ago, according to data from the employers’ association Anfac. The Girona car market continues to record better data than a year ago. In the first eight months of the year, up to 7,562 have been sold cars, 13.31% more than in the same period in 2022.

The package made up of electric, hybrid and gas cars account for up to 49.23% of the sales made this year in the demarcation. This type of vehicle is followed by petrol cars, with 3,260 cars registered this 2023 and a market share of 43.11%. Diesel vehicles, with only 579 sales, are the only ones to register negative data compared to last year. In particular, registrations have fallen by 12.41% so far this year.

More 7,500 registrations

In Catalonia, passenger car registrations have increased by 21.2% during August compared to the data for the same period last year, up to 7,528 vehicles. According to employers’ association Anfac, the figure is lower than the 10,211 cars sold during July, but this is normal sales behavior considering that it is a holiday period. In the first eight months of the year, Catalonia has registered 77,552 cars, 18.7% more than a year ago. In the State as a whole, the figure climbs to 642,580 registrations, 20.5% more than last year, but 27% below 2019. The employer has warned that the economic context may cause a “slowdown” of sales during the last quarter of the year.

Anfac has detailed that the year-on-year growth recorded during August has been driven mainly by sales to individuals, which have improved by 19.5%, and companies, which have risen by 5.7%. In this way, the sector chains eight months of growth compared to the previous year.

On the other hand, the market aimed at rental car companies has suffered a 39.2% decline, to 3,189 units. Anfac has attributed the decline to the fact that most companies made purchases in the months prior to the summer tourist campaign.

The 7,528 vehicles registered during August in Catalonia represented 13.5% of the State’s total. Madrid has remained the community with the most cars sold, with 19,295, 34.5% of the total.

By type of fuel, in Catalonia up to 3,154 were petrol vehicles, 18.24% more than a year ago. On the other hand, diesel vehicles have fallen by 31.51%, to 476 units, compared to 695 in 2022. Almost 3,900 passenger cars have been powered by other types of fuel, with an improvement of 36.8% compared to previous year

Vehicles electrificats

Taking into account only electrified vehicles – electric and plug-in hybrids – during August, 1,091 passenger cars were sold in Catalonia, 51.1% more than a year ago (then there were 722). Cumulatively in the first eight months, the units sold amount to 11,446, 47.2% more year-on-year. Also, 2,657 hybrid vehicles have been sold, 27.68% more annually; and 290 gas, 45% more.

In the State, sales of electrified vehicles during August grew by 60.3%, up to 7,507 cars and represented a market share of 11.08%. In the cumulative period between January and August, the units sold have totaled 78,579 vehicles and, although the figure is improved by more than 50% from a year ago, Anfac has warned that these are “very low” volumes to reach the emission reduction targets. Hybrids have grown by 22.5%, up to 19,282; and gas ones by 72.21%, up to a total of 1,760 units.
