BOLZANO. In the end, the dozens of security cameras monitoring Piazza Magnago “handed over” the culprit to the police station. He is a 36-year-old from Bolzano, his initials TDA, belonging to the anarcho-insurrectionist world active in the region, as well as the scion of a wealthy family residing in Alto Adige. Hooded and dressed in black, he had daubed with
the steps leading to the provincial council building were painted red on the night between Sunday and Monday. He was framed by one of the videos that saw him fleeing towards the center from Via Laurin.
The unsigned envelope found nearby the next morning also dates back to him and a group of accomplices. Inside, investigators found an explicit reference to the anniversary of the October 7 massacre carried out by Hamas with the massacres of Palestinian civilians, mentioning among other things the “blood shed in Gaza and Palestine”. Precisely during a pro-Palestine march, on the occasion of the passage of the Giro d’Italia last May, the 36-year-old was reported for illegal occupation of public land and for not having provided his personal details together with twenty-three other people.
The episode happened at two in the morning, without the presence of witnesses. There would have been an accomplice who would have accompanied him close to Piazza Magnago, and then left responsibility for the vandalism to the young man from Bolzano. The police commissioner Paolo Sartori, in addition to the complaint for damage, ordered the start of the procedure to issue an oral public safety warning, provided for by the Code of Anti-Mafia Laws.
The sentences
Yesterday, while some workers were struggling to clean the staircase and the police were trying to trace the perpetrator as quickly as possible, the political world condemned the act of vandalism. From vice president Angelo Gennaccaro, who spoke of a lack of respect for the institution, to governor Arno Kompatscher who expressed disdain. «The fact that this cowardly gesture – underlines the provincial councilor Christian Bianchi – was carried out by an anarcho-insurrectionist who tried to connect it to international events unrelated to the Council’s decisions is unacceptable and deserves firm condemnation». Now, in addition to the criminal sanctions envisaged, other exemplary measures could be implemented. «I think it is useful – continues Bianchi – for the person responsible to personally clean the steps of the Provincial Council. This gesture would not only partially repair the damage, but would offer an opportunity to reflect on the importance of respect for common goods. They belong to everyone and must be preserved with the utmost care”
