While it assures that it wants to save to restore public finances, the State continues to finance pharaonic projects that are destructive to the environment. Between nuclear power, the Lyon-Turin high-speed line, the mega-basins, the Seine-North canal and the 2030 Winter Olympics, more than 48 billion euros will be created, if they don’t go up in smoke.
What if, instead of taxing citizens more and more, the State stopped financing crazy projects, both for the planet and for our finances? Five “ecocidal” projects were identified by Reporterre which offers a simple solution: abandon them. Synthesis of absurd choices with potentially dramatic long-term consequences.
First, nuclear energy, described by Macron as the “project of the century”, is a trap. With 35 billion euros coming out of the coffers for the construction of six EPR2 reactors, with no guarantee of their profitability, “consumers and taxpayers will go out of pocket”, warns Maxime Laisney, MP of the LFI. If the EDF makes a mistake, the state will have to fix it. And with energy!
Then, the LGV Lyon-Turin, this monster from the 90s, continues to bog down. With tunnels in the Alps, this estimated €30 billion project continues to destroy ecosystems with dubious results. As Philippe Delhomme, co-president of the Vivre et Act en Maurienne association, says: “There is already a line, used at only 20% of its capacity.”
The Seine-Northern Europe canal won’t do much for the environment despite its supposed “greening” of transport. What about megabasins? A heresy that costs 840 million to dry up the aquifers and irrigate intensive crops.
The icing on the cake is the 2030 Winter Olympics in the Alps. Even though we know well that the snow disappears at low altitudes, the State plans to invest 900 million euros to make this event an unmissable event. And this despite the almost unanimous opposition of the local population.
These projects are conceived Macron-style, as grandiose monuments to the glory of the absurd. If the State continues on this path, the real price will be paid by the environment and future generations.
