The state of California is promoting plans for self-production of insulin. California Gov. Gwyn Newsm has allocated $ 100 million from the state’s new budget for this purpose. The governor has been known for his position, ever since he was elected in 2019, supporting the self-production of generic drugs.

The plan is based on an administrative order signed by Niosam when he was elected in 2019, an order aimed at putting California on track for self-manufacturing prescription drugs. Half of the funding will be used to develop cheap insulin products, and the other half to build production facilities that will strengthen the local supply chain while creating more jobs in the country.

“Nothing sums up the market failures more than the price of insulin,” the governor said on Twitter on July 7. Many Americans pay out of pocket $ 300 to $ 500 a month for this life-saving drug, the governor noted. This is not the only move to self-manufacture drugs in various US states. In 2018, a group of health care providers launched a non-profit drug company in Utah to produce generic (imitation) versions of important and expensive drugs that are in low inventory in the US. This company (Civica Rx) currently markets generic drugs, manufactured by independent contractors, at prices significantly lower than average market prices. In March, the company announced its plans to produce and market generic versions of three types of insulin – glargine, lispro and aspart. The company will develop and manufacture these products, complete clinical trials in them and submit the documents required to obtain a sales approval from the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA). From the moment of receiving this approval, the company plans to sell these versions at a price significantly lower than the market price, a price not to exceed $ 30 per bottle and a price not to exceed $ 55 for a box of five injection pens.

In the past, the governor has reportedly considered joining this company in order to produce generic versions of essential drugs within California. It is still unclear if the company is involved in the governor’s new plans.
