The Supreme Council of the Berbers of Libya issued a statement condemning the entry of “armed formations” into the city of Yafran, reiterating its full support for the people of the city and the decision of the notables, elders, and the municipal council to expel these “formations.”
In a statement, the Council described this step as an attempt to expand the sphere of influence of the parties to the conflict in Libya, stressing the people of Yafran’s categorical rejection of these moves.
The statement indicated that the position of the people of the municipality of Yafran in rejecting the division of security directorates is considered a legitimate right, explaining that resolving this issue requires responding to the demands of the protesters.
The Council also expressed its concern about information indicating the “kidnapping” of people of unknown identity while moving outside the city, holding the government and all concerned parties responsible for the safety of the demonstrators and the people of Yafran as a whole.
The Council warned against any movements of “tribal militias” within cities and municipalities, stressing its rejection of any “military or security divisions of a tribal nature,” according to the statement.
The Presidential Council, in its capacity as Supreme Commander, called for the withdrawal of “armed formations” from Yafran and the cessation of any military movements to maintain security and stability in the region, according to the statement.
Yesterday, the city of Yafran witnessed a peaceful demonstration demanding the withdrawal of the “armed brigades” that entered the city, for fear of being drawn into armed conflicts, according to a statement by Yafran Municipal Council member, Saeed Bouqsia, to Libya Al-Ahrar.
Bouqsiaa reported that the “battalion” that entered Yafran belonged to the western military region, and opened fire on the peaceful demonstrators, wounding some of them, one of them seriously.
