Karachi: The Supreme Court said that the military regime hanged Pakistan’s former Prime Minister Zulfikar Ali Bhutto without a fair trial. Bhutto came to power on August 14, 1973 and was in power for four years.

He was ousted in a military coup by General Zia-ul-Haq on 5 July 1977. Zia-ul-Haq became president a year later. Bhutto was hanged on April 4, 1979 for the murder of a political rival.

The court observed that Bhutto was hanged without due process of law. Bhutto is the founder of Pakistan People’s Party (PPP). Benazir Bhutto, the first female Prime Minister of Pakistan, is his daughter.

In 2011, when Benazir’s husband Asif Ali Zardari was president, the matter came before the Supreme Court for re-examination. Bhutto’s grandson and former foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto is the current chairman of the PPP.
