As Marcelo Ebrard predicted, USA won over Mexico the discussion on transgenic corn on the controversy panel of the T-MECwhose resolution was made public this Friday.
The panel resolved that the Mexico restrictions for the import of genetically modified corn issued in 2023 have no scientific basis and violate the standards established in the treaty between Mexico, the United States and Canada related to sanitary measures, phytosanitary, national treatment and market access.

He final reportpublished by the Office of the United States Trade Representativefinally supported the seven legal claims presented by said country and recommended Mexico align your commercial policies regarding corn to those of the treaty.
Mexico will have a within 45 days to comply with the recommendations issued by the three-member panel.
Mexico’s response
For its part, the Ministry of Economy of Mexico reported through a statement that the T-MEC panel considered that some elements of the Decree on glyphosate and genetically modified cornpublished in the Official Gazette of the Federation on February 13, 2023, “cannot be applied as they are not based on an adequate risk assessment, scientific evidence and relevant international standards.”

In the same joint statement, the Government of Mexico stated that it does not agree with the determination of the panel since the discarded measures are “aligned with the principles of protection of public health and the rights of indigenous peoples, established in national legislation and in the international treaties to which it is a party.”
However, it was reported that Mexico will abide by the panel’s determination being a fundamental piece in the resolution of conflicts within the treaty.
