The Drama Studio in Ústí nad Labem presented a new production about what expectant fathers go through during their partner’s pregnancy. The comedy called A vybuchla Setuza was written and directed by Adam Ernest. In addition to the two actresses, video projections and live music play an important role in it.
The premiere took place this Friday in Hraničář Public Hall, which is celebrating its tenth anniversary since reopening. The nearest reruns follow on October 6 and 14.
“The game arose out of the need to express my own personal experience with the expectation of first fatherhood. To express myself from a man’s point of view about this issue, which I feel is viewed more often from a woman’s point of view,” says Adam Ernest. According to him, a common experience of expectant fathers is staying in the company of a pregnant partner. “The questions always focus on how the woman is doing, how she experiences it, how she manages it, the man just looks on, acts as a guard,” mentions Ernest.
The show questions whether men have a right to fear parenthood. “It’s an intensely grotesque statement about the various forms of selfishness and the bunkers we hide in from ourselves. About trying to be the perfect father and the hard-to-hide insecurities. About the demands placed on future parents by today’s society and the possibility of failure. About one explosion, ” states the annotation of the production, in which only two characters perform.
The man is played by Andrea Uhlík Berecková. “She is an excellent friend of mine, with whom I have personally dealt with and experienced things. Moreover, she is extremely suitable for the role. I can’t imagine that it would be anyone else,” explains director Ernest. The cleaner was then portrayed by Nataša Gáčová. “They played together in many things as a close couple and it works well for them together,” adds the director.
The scene is simple, oppressive and sterile. It is projected in the background. The main character is dancing and the music is playing. “It’s actually a relaxing concert, you celebrate together something that under normal circumstances you would rather hide at home,” says dramaturg Kateřina Součková. Projections underline the dynamics and in some places advance the story, music helps to create emotions. It was composed by Viktor Ori and Antonín Kropáček, who accompanies the performance directly on stage. The novelty was co-produced by the Drama Studio and the Kult festival.
