The viguesa industry is noticing “a certain deceleration” due to the uncertainties that lurk on the international scene. It must be taken into account that three out of every four euros of its production goes outside Spainassures the general secretary of the metal employers’ association, Asime, Enrique Mallón.

The slowdown is not the same in all industry subsectors, which do have common problems, such as lack of qualified personnel and increasingly scarce and more expensive credit that is beginning to affect the operations of the companies. Despite the uncertainties, the truth is that the industry is close to one hundred percent capacity and the level of activity is high, however the situation of international instability is already affecting some.

“Our capacities are close to 100%although we already see a certain slowdown and a bit of uncertainty about how the global panorama is going to continue, since the 75% of our production goes outside of Spain”, says the representative of the metal employers’ association Enrique Mallón.

He adds that “health is good in the metal sector, but there is lack of professionals and greater difficulty in accessing financing and creditwhich we are already seeing increasingly scarce and more expensive.”

He Unemployment in the industrial sector in Vigo has dropped by 15% so far this year and Social Security affiliation continues to rise. In terms of exports, the Vigo area is on track for 9 years of growth and remains the fourth most exporting province in Spain.

In a review by subsectors, in the case of navalthe activity is high, although it is not the same in all shipyards, but on average 80% occupancy. In the auxiliary naval industry, employment is around 100%.

As regards the aeronautical industry, is also in full growth this year 2023 when it comes to commercial and unmanned aircraft. Enrique Mallón specifies that “Galicia has the majority of its activity in commercial aircraft with companies such as Delta Vigo, Utingal, Precisgal, Ganain or Centum, but it is also growing in unmanned aircraft, although this segment is developing more in the Lugo area. ”, he points out.

With respect to automotivedespite the Stellantis stoppages due to supplies, the volume remains high. “There is concern that the expected figures will not be reached,” says the representative of the sector’s business association. He also adds that “it is appropriate that in the automotive sector the commitment to electric vehicles be clarified, because there is still uncertainty among the consumer.”

As positive cases in Vigo point to GKN or Borgwarner companies that are “pushing hard on employment in its plants as an automotive components industry.”

He subsector of metal structures, is closely linked to public works “and in this field it is being very high activity”, points out Enrique Mallón. In aluminum extrusion, there are over 7,000 jobs in Galicia and growing.

The lack of professionals is made up for with machinery and technology

The general secretary of Asime, Enrique Mallón, emphasizes that the auxiliary shipbuilding industry is below its productive capacity by lack of qualified professionals. This lack is being made up for with machinery and more advanced management systems, which allow more tasks to be carried out, as detailed.

Naval professionals are the most in demand.

In fact, the State Public Employment Service (SEPE) has identified a twenty professions in the province of Pontevedra that are difficult to fill. They are those of naval refrigerators, chief engineers of merchant ships, coastal and naval mechanics, ship cooks, oilers, deck boys, boilermakers, firefighters of specialized ships or radio-electronic officers of the merchant navy, among other positions. There would also be a shortage of professional athletes and sports coaches, according to the SEPE catalog corresponding to the first quarter of the year.

In this sense, the Confederation of Businessmen of Pontevedra hosted these days the presentation of the Retorna Emprego Forum. More than 800 highly qualified professionals from sectors with high demand, such as Engineering, Construction, Transport and Logistics, Biomedical and ICT, have their training accredited, in addition to the documentation and necessary skills to start working in Galicia, in their capacity as emigrants with the intention of returning or their descendants.

This initiative, developed by the Xunta de Galicia with the Nortempo Group Foundation as the driving entity, aims to attract talent in emigration and incorporate it into the Galician labor market.
