The Voice of the Voiceless for Human Rights (VSV) is very concerned about the unfortunate and tragic incident that occurred on the night of September 1 to 2, 2024 in Makala Central Prison, an incident that resulted in the death of a man and significant material damage. . According to the Congolese authorities, this incident was caused by the attempt of the prisoners to escape from the prison.
Allegations of many people killed and injured by bullets as well as significant material damage cannot leave Human Rights Defenders indifferent. Therefore, the VSV calls for a mixed and truly independent investigation to shed light on this situation that has led to violations of human rights including, among other things, a violation of the right to life and respect for physical integrity and moral of the whole person. .
It is important that responsibilities are laid down so that the authors, sponsors and perpetrators of this tragic event are held accountable for their actions.
Overall, the VSV reminds the Congolese authorities that no reason or excuse can justify violations of human rights, including intangible rights, in this case the right to life.
