A police officer threw a poor black man over a wall. This case was filmed and sparked outrage. It is not known how many are thrown daily by police officers through walls in Sao Paulo and many other cities across the country.
What does it mean to throw away a poor black man? That he is one of the millions of surpluses who don’t fit in, who aren’t necessary, who society doesn’t need, who can function perfectly without them, and even function better without them. That’s why they can be thrown and there will only be a reaction if they are filmed being thrown over the wall.
What does this mean? That there is a mechanism operating in Brazilian capitalism, which cannot cope with the 216 million inhabitants of Brazil, which does not have space for everyone.
Brazilian capitalism exists to produce profits in the hands of big capitalists. To do this, a certain number of people are needed, who constitute the workforce that produces goods.
Others may throw themselves over walls. If they survive, good luck to them and their families. Otherwise, others will be thrown from above.
In this case, after being filmed and causing outrage, the police officer and 13 other people were removed by the police. That is, they were there, but they did nothing, they were accomplices, they were used to these acts.
The police officer who threw the person over the wall went to testify in Rio de Janeiro and ended up being fired from the institution, it was later discovered that he had a very serious record, including deaths; of 11 people. That is to say, even after that he continued to work as a police officer, supposedly taking care of public order and our individual safety. Only because he performed this act did his file become public. Otherwise it would continue there, fulfilling its functions.
This is how capitalism works. Select some people to work in different police forces. This selection focuses on training people for the roles they will fill. It is not your background that matters, but rather your physical condition to perform the role of a police officer.
In society, there are those who are on this side of the wall and those who are projected outside the wall. There are some that are integrated into the operational mechanisms of the production of surplus value. And there are those who are not needed, who can project themselves over the wall, towards the stream. Which will survive, depending on how it is conceived, depending on the fall. One way or another, they will be designed by the police officers who are at the top of the wall, ensuring the public safety of society.
The wall separates them from each other. Those who have roles in the reproduction of capital, be they workers, engineers and police, who are responsible for the general order of functioning of society. And those who are thrown over the wall. Those who have no role in the functioning of capitalism, who don’t need to stay up there.
The function of the wall is this: to mark the division between one person and another. It is the class line in capitalist society.
