The World Health Organization announced an increasing trend in smallpox infection rates worldwide, noting that more than 2,700 confirmed cases of the disease were recorded in one month.

The organization said in a statement: “2,763 cases of infection with the mpox (monkey) virus were reported in September, and this number of cases is the highest since November 2022, indicating a trend of increasing infection rates around the world.”
The statement added: “The number of infections increased by 8% compared to August, with the largest increase recorded in Africa at 35%, where 1,756 new cases of mpox were recorded in September at the same time, the infection rate in Europe a 26% reduction to reach 211 cases, and in the United States 32%, reaching 427 cases.”
The organization noted that “from January 1, 2022 to September 30, 2024, 109,699 confirmed cases of mpox were recorded in 123 countries worldwide, including 236 deaths.”
The World Health Organization had previously declared the monkey a public health emergency of international concern.
