The Legislature said that the actions of ADN assembly members, Valentina Centeno and Fernando Jaramillo, will be sanctioned as serious misconduct.
This Saturday, June 22, 2024, the National Assembly published a statement in which it reiterates that “there is no intention to declare the mental incapacity of the President of the Republic (Daniel Noboa).”
The Assembly Plan issued a resolution on June 20 in which it rejects the qualifiers that the President made against several leaders in the region and apologizes to the aggrieved countries.
Noboa’s expressions to which the Assembly alludes were published in a profile of the President, carried out by the renowned journalist Jonn Lee Anderson for the American magazine The New Yorker, published on June 17, 2024.
During the Plenary debate and in statements to the press, the ruling ADN assembly member, Valentina Centeno, assured that the new legislative majority sought to “declare the mental incapacity” of President Noboa, and thus achieve his removal from office.
The legislator of the ADN bench, Fernando Jaramillo, went further and on June 21 presented a ‘criminis news’ in the Prosecutor’s Office, warning of an alleged attempt to destabilize the government of Daniel Noboa.
According to Jaramillo, this ‘plan’ would have been conceived especially in the National Assembly, with several actions supposedly aimed at declaring President Noboa’s mental incapacity.
Sanctions «“This narrative is nothing more than a political trick that aims to damage the good image that the National Assembly has been building in the last seven months of administration,” the Legislature said in its statement.
He added that these acts of “raising false news to generate instability in the country” constitute a “serious crime” provided for in article 353, paragraph 11, of the Comprehensive Penal Code. Furthermore, it points out that the conduct of the two legislators, Valentina Centeno and Fernando Jaramillo, who referred to the issue, will be investigated and sanctioned as serious misconduct, in accordance with the provisions of the Legislative Function Law.
