These bloody attacks were attributed to “Chechen terrorists” by the authorities and served as a prelude to the outbreak, in October 1999, of the second Russo-Chechen conflict. The siege lasted two days and three nights before ending with a special forces assault carried out using powerful gas, resulting in the death of almost all of the 130 victims.

On July 5, 2003, a double suicide attack at the entrance to a rock concert at the Touchino airfield in Moscow left 15 dead, in addition to the two female suicide bombers, and around fifty injured. Some 20,000 young people were there to attend the traditional “Krylia” rock music festival.

The attack was not claimed but was attributed by the Russian authorities to Chechen independence rebels.
