JAKARTA – The public’s response to the Ministry of Education and Culture’s policy which did not require a thesis as a graduation requirement was positively responded by students. One of them was a student at the Jakarta State University (UNJ).

One of the UNJ Faculty of Education students, Eka Maulana Saputra (19) said he positively welcomed the not having a thesis as a graduation requirement.

He considered, generally students who have graduated want to get a job immediately, so that thesis is not the main requirement for graduation.

“Actually, I agree, thesis is only used as an option. Especially at the end of the semester, we want to be able to work immediately. Meanwhile, thesis is not asked for when applying for a job, especially since everyone has their own expertise,” said Eka when met at UNJ, Thursday (31/8/2023).

Eka, who is still a first semester freshman, prefers the final internship as a graduation requirement. In his opinion, apprenticeship opportunities are more needed in terms of professional competence in the world of work.

“I prefer the final assignment to be an apprenticeship. Since we’re in college to be able to work, it’s definitely more suitable to just practice without a thesis anymore,” explained Eka.

“But I’m very open if a thesis is still needed as a graduation requirement. I don’t really mind,” continued Eka.

Furthermore, a UNJ student in the German Language Education study program, Faculty of Languages and Arts, Zia (20) revealed that thesis was not the first choice in measuring expertise in her field of study. In line with Eka, Zia believes that apprenticeships are used more effectively to measure graduation competencies.
