He cuban regime would be carrying out “influence” operations in the face of the upcoming elections in the United States.
This was revealed by a recent report from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI), which specified that the Castro regime would be influencing the support of candidates in the 2024 legislative elections who support the relief of sanctions and the best relations between the Cuban dictatorship and the United States.
In that sense, in the ODNI report, in addition to the cuban regimeother countries such as Russia and China also appear that would be operating to influence the elections in the United States.
The report indicates that the Cuban dictatorship “almost certainly” he is trying to influence the results of candidates that benefit the interests of the communists in matters of foreign policy, and especially in their relations with Washington.
“Cuba has tried in previous elections to help candidates they consider to be in line with their interests, such as the reduction of economic sanctions,” indicated a US intelligence official who offered statements on condition of anonymity, according to the AP agency, in charge of publishing the report.
Likewise, they indicated that influence operations are not only limited to important positions of power in the US, but also target local and state elections, seeking the support of candidates who can have a direct impact on US foreign policy.
Likewise, United States intelligence agencies stressed that these influence activities are designed with the aim of changing public and political perception towards the communist island.
“Cuba is not new to these attempts, but current conditions allow them to intensify their efforts,” the report noted.
Finally, they indicated that, like Russia and China, the Cuban regime has been behind disinformation campaigns with the purpose of influencing public opinion and changing the course of the elections in the United States.
These campaigns are being fueled by the creation of fake social media accounts and websites that make people believe they are American citizens promoting disinformation about candidates in the US.
“Disinformation is a powerful tool used to generate distrust in the electoral system and increase internal divisions in the United States,” another ODNI official explained.
In the case of Cuba, the narrative focuses on improving bilateral relations and reducing economic tensions caused by sanctions imposed by the United States.
