TikTok moderators in Spain are determined to maintain the indefinite strike they started last Monday. Now they have launched a crowdfunding campaign with which they seek to raise funds that will allow them to stay away from their computers until Majorel, the subcontractor of the Chinese ‘app’ that has hired them, agrees to maintain teleworking in the company.

«Majorel tells us that he can’t do anything. “That the issue of returning to the office is up to the client (TikTok), but we don’t quite believe it,” one of the moderators of the Chinese ‘app’ explains in conversation with ABC.

In the campaign, which has already raised just over 1,000 euros and has been launched by the Solidarity and Unity of Workers union (SUT), attention is drawn to “the hard work with a strong load of psychological pressure” that they carry out. the moderators every day. This involves, on a daily basis, seeing problematic content that violates the rules of the social network over and over again. For example, videos of child pornography, rape, suicide, murder or torture.

Their salaries, “especially low”, vary between 1,200 euros and 1,300 for eight-hour days that can include weekends. They point out that the total abolition of teleworking, which has been prevailing at Majorel since the arrival of the pandemic, has no “technical justification” and that its imposition would force many of the more than a thousand workers on staff to leave the company. Which is precisely what the TikTok subcontractor would be trying to achieve, according to what they claim.

«What they want is for the permanent workers to leave, because this way they save compensation and can hire more workers from Temporary Employment Agencies (ETT). Here the normal thing is that it lasts approximately a year and a half,” says the Majorel worker. The statement emphasizes that the forced return to the office represents “a dramatic alteration in the living and working conditions of the staff.”

They have no intention of stopping

The moderators continue to have daily meetings and are not willing to give in. At least for the moment. As this newspaper has learned, Majorel has offered them “small bonuses” to get them back to work, but they consider it insufficient. “They earn millions with us and they are only offering us crumbs,” says the subcontractor’s employee.

The will of the moderators is to continue the strike as long as necessary. Crowdfunding seeks to alleviate the situation of employees who, for family or other reasons, are suffering more from the loss of wages caused by the strike. “Depending on the response obtained, we will prioritize situations with minors in charge and with financial problems such as paying rent,” says the SUT statement.

The moderators are clear that the break is having effects on Majorel. They are open to negotiating with the company, but, as we have said, as long as it and TikTok continue to impose a total return to the office, they have no intention of giving in: they will continue not going to their workplace.
