The Ministry of Communications (Mincom) of Cuba reported that they are working at an accelerated pace to put into operation, as soon as possible, the new submarine telecommunications cable, known as the Arimao project, which will allow diversifying Internet connection routes on the island.

According to ACN, the fiber optic cable, which has been deployed following an agreement between the Cuban Telecommunications Company SA (Etecsa) and the French company Orange SA, will help cover the country’s demand for Internet connection and broadband.

For his part, the director of Telecommunications of the Mincom, explained that after having completed the physical laying by the sea, between Martinique and the Cuban province of Cienfuegos, the work is in the process of linking and future tests.

The official added that the land part remains to be completed, as well as the integration of the equipment and systems of the points that interconnect, but that once completed, this will bring with it an increase and diversification of international connectivity in the Greater Antilles. .

In December 2022, Etecsa and Orange SA agreed to lay an underwater fiber optic cable, which, according to Cuban authorities, will benefit both the economy and society.

The document signed between both entities explains that it is a system deployed by the Orange company, through its subsidiary Orange Marine.

The cable, which has a length of 2,500 kilometers, made landfall on January 10 in Martinique, after beginning its installation in the Tricontinental Port of the central Cuban province of Cienfuegos.

Etecsa indicated that strict compliance standards have been taken into account for its installation so as not to affect areas with large concentrations of marine plants, demonstrating the corporate commitment to caring for the environment.

At a meeting of the Interinstitutional Council, it was revealed that by 2023 an increase in the capacities of the transmission network and data centers is intended to ensure the demand for traffic and services.

Likewise, the aim is to create new access points to the network, order the migration towards the IPV6 standard (latest version of the Internet protocol), as well as the commercialization of the fixed wireless access service.
